Managed IT vs. Hiring In-House IT in Milwaukee (2026 Cost)
A full-time IT support specialist in the Milwaukee metro earns a median $60,230 (BLS, May 2025), or about $87,900 a year with benefits. Managed IT for 25 computers runs $3,400 a month at our list price, about $40,800 a year. At 60 computers the costs are close, but you get a team, not one person.

What does an in-house IT person cost in Milwaukee?
Start with what the job actually pays here, not a national salary survey. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes wages for the Milwaukee-Waukesha, WI metro area by occupation. These are the three roles a small business usually means when it says "we should hire an IT person":
| Role (SOC code) | Employed in metro | Median annual wage | With benefits, per year | With benefits, per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer user support specialist (15-1232) | 3,580 | $60,230 | $87,927 | $7,327 |
| Network and computer systems administrator (15-1244) | 2,130 | $90,140 | $131,591 | $10,966 |
| Information security analyst (15-1212) | 690 | $101,550 | $148,248 | $12,354 |

How we got the "with benefits" number
BLS reports that wages and salaries make up 68.5% of total employer compensation costs for full-time private-industry workers (June 2026). The rest is benefits: paid leave, insurance, retirement, and legally required costs like Social Security and unemployment insurance. So the loaded cost is the wage divided by 0.685, not the wage plus a benefits percentage:
$60,230 ÷ 0.685 = about $87,927 a year, or $7,327 a month.
That mixes a local wage with a national benefits share, so treat it as a planning number, not a quote. We use the same method in our big MSP vs. small local MSP comparison.
What the number leaves out (assumptions, not data)
The loaded cost covers wages and benefits only. These costs are real but vary too much to put one number on, so we left them out. Price them for your own business:
- •Recruiting. Job postings, a recruiter's fee if you use one, and the weeks the seat sits empty while you search.
- •Tools. Remote monitoring, endpoint protection, backup, a ticketing system, and a password manager. An MSP brings its own; an employee needs you to buy them.
- •Training and certifications. Microsoft 365, firewall, and security skills go stale fast. Courses and exam fees are on you.
- •Ramp-up and turnover. A new hire needs months to learn your systems. If they leave, that knowledge walks out with them unless it is documented.
What do you get for the same money from an MSP?
Here is our published list price at three common office sizes, next to the loaded cost of one in-house IT support specialist ($87,927 a year). The MSP number is computers × plan rate ($75 Remote or $125 Premium) + servers × $125 + locations × $150, per month. The server and location counts are our assumptions for a typical office of that size; change them in the estimator to match yours.
| Office size | Assumed setup | Plan | MSP per month | MSP per year | One hire per year | Difference per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 computers | Cloud-only office, no server, 1 location | Remote ($75/computer) | $900 | $10,800 | $87,927 | MSP $77,127 less |
| 25 computers | 1 server, 1 location | Premium ($125/computer) | $3,400 | $40,800 | $87,927 | MSP $47,127 less |
| 60 computers | 3 servers, 2 locations | Premium ($125/computer) | $8,175 | $98,100 | $87,927 | MSP $10,173 more |

Reading the table honestly
At 10 computers, one hire costs about 8 times our Remote plan. At 25 computers, the hire still costs roughly double. At 60 computers the MSP is the bigger line item, by about $10,173 a year. But a 60-computer office with 3 servers and 2 sites is more than one support specialist can run. Add a systems administrator ($131,591 loaded) and in-house payroll reaches $219,518 a year, still without a security specialist.
What one person cannot cover
- •Vacation and sick days. Paid leave alone is 8.1% of full-time private-industry compensation (BLS, June 2026). When your one IT person is out, nobody answers the ticket.
- •After hours. A server that dies at 9 PM waits until morning, or your IT person works unpaid overtime. Our monitoring runs 24/7 on both plans, and after-hours emergency support is included on the Premium plan only.
- •Security depth. Information security analysts earn a median $101,550 here, and BLS counts only 690 of them in the whole metro. A generalist rarely has that skill set. Both our plans include 24/7 SOC monitoring, endpoint detection and response (EDR), vulnerability remediation and daily security log review, email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC).
- •Response time. During business hours (Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5 PM, Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM (Central)) our first-response targets are 5 minutes for critical issues, 15 minutes for high priority, and 30 minutes for normal requests, no matter who is on vacation.
One caveat on the 10-computer row: the Remote plan is remote-first. On-site visits are $100 an hour, and after-hours emergency support is Premium only. See what each plan covers on our managed IT services in Milwaukee page.
When hiring in-house makes sense
We sell managed IT, so weigh this accordingly. There are real cases where an internal hire is the right call:
- •You have 150 or more users. At that size the ticket volume alone can keep a full-time person busy, and a small internal team starts to pay for itself.
- •You need hands on site every day. A plant floor in Menomonee Falls with scanners, label printers, and shop-floor PCs, or a lab with instruments, can need someone walking the building daily.
- •Your systems are unusual. Custom line-of-business software, in-house development, or equipment only your staff understands is hard to hand to an outside team.
- •IT is part of what you sell. If technology is the product, not just a tool, you want that knowledge on payroll.
It does not have to be either-or. Plenty of Waukesha County and Milwaukee companies keep one internal IT person and hand us monitoring, security, overflow, and projects. That is co-managed IT: your person stays in charge, and they stop being a single point of failure. If you want us to take the whole job instead, that is IT outsourcing.
How to decide
Work through this list before you post a job or sign with anyone:
- Count what you have. Computers people actually use, servers (physical or virtual), and office locations.
- Price the hire properly. Take the local median for the role you need and divide by 0.685. Then add your own estimate for recruiting, tools, and training.
- Price the MSP the same way. Run the cost estimator or get written quotes that list a per-computer, per-server, and per-location rate.
- Ask who covers the gaps. Who answers when your IT person is on vacation, sick, or asleep? What happens at 2 AM on a Saturday?
- Check your security requirements. Cyber insurance forms, HIPAA, or PCI-DSS can require controls one generalist cannot run and document alone.
- Estimate on-site needs. If most problems need someone standing at the machine every day, weight that toward in-house or a Premium plan with on-site included.
- Check the exit. A month-to-month MSP is easy to reverse. A bad hire takes longer to undo.
